Asleep at the Wheel

For over 50 years, Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson has been traversing the globe as an ambassador of Western swing music and introducing its irresistible sound to generation after generation. More than 100 musicians have passed through the Wheel, but Benson remains the front man and the keeper of the vision, in the process racking up more than 30 albums, ten Grammy awards and literally millions of miles on the road.
What has followed the recent lineup change is a steady dose of touring the world – and now the band’s 32nd record Riding High In Texas, featuring Stewart and Benson as the band’s lead vocalists. This marks AATW’s first new release since their 50th anniversary project Half A Hundred Years in 2021

Born in Linden, Tx, home of T-Bone Walker and the Eagles' Don Henley, I grew up soaking in a vast array of music. I may have started the day listening to Townes Van Zandt albums and by afternoon listening to Pantera at full volume! I've always had a deep appreciation for ANY style if music as long it spoke to me deep down in some way. Through a few bands in my earlier years, I would try to mimic all of the great artists I aspired to be like and hoped to one day reach a level that they had. It wasn't until I met Jackson Browne after one of his acoustic shows that actually found my calling. That night I realized how powerful one person and guitar can be. The songs I've written since that time are open honest songs that were crafted from experiences in my life. All real #100 from the soul, no filler! I hope that my music can be enjoyed and speak to the listener as music has spoken to me. I've shared the stage with numerous bands all throughout Texas, been thanked in liner credits (Cinder Cell), and even opened up for some national acts (Metalachi, REHAB, and Dax Riggs) along the way. I hope there is some you can relate to in my music, something that makes you laugh, something that makes you cry.... Whatever the case... I hope it moves you!
